Mercury In Retrograde: How It Affects Your Motherhood

Your toddler isn’t listening (even more than usual). You forget to pack a change of clothes for daycare. You leave your grocery list at home, and can’t remember if he likes the cereal in the blue box or the red box.

As if being a mom wasn’t crazy enough, things go absolutely nuts a few times a year when mercury is in retrograde.

You’ve heard about it from the moms who carry crystals in their diaper bags or schedule playdates based on zodiac signs, but what does mercury in retrograde really mean?

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, making its orbit is much shorter than Earth’s. According to the Astro Twins, “three or four times a year, Mercury passes the earth in its orbit. As it rounds the bend, Mercury slows down and appears to stop (station) and spin backward (retrograde).”

Mercury rules all types of communication–which explains why your three year old suddenly can’t hear you when you ask her to put her shoes on for the fifth time. When mercury is in retrograde, communication goes haywire, including speaking, listening learning, reading, editing, researching, negotiating, selling, and buying. Astrologers believe Mercury also affects codes like the ones used in computers, transportation, shipping, and travel.

What does that mean for you as a mom?

Relax. Typically, mercury in retrograde only lasts for about 20 days–and it isn’t all bad. “The current approach to Mercury retrograde is about as low-vibe as it gets. There’s so much fear-mongering,” says writer and astrologist Lennon Mara. “[But] to me, they are some of the most magical times that I get to experience.”

Mercury in retrograde can be a time of great creativity. Use this time to update your vision board, finger paint with the kids, or journal your pregnancy. Or, begin practicing a new mantra. “Because we have more access to the subconscious mind, we have more influence…during that time,” Mara says. “Your subconscious mind will absorb it, and you’ll be better able to integrate that mantra into your conscious mind.”

Since Mercury also rules anything beginning with “re,” the retrograde period is also a good time to reflect, renew, and reconnect. Make time for self care and refresh your spirit. Motherhood is hard, and we all need time to relax.
