“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey

It’s been said that in order to know where we’re going, we have to know where we’ve come from. When black history month rolls around each year, we’re quick to teach our children all about the contributions of our black heroes–but what about the other 11 months of the year?

Trish Lewis, Founder and CEO of Heritage Box, is working on celebrating black history for more than 28 days (29 this leap year).

Heritage Box, a monthly subscription box for children ages 5 to 12, is designed to deliver engaging content on black history and African geography year round.

Trish grew up in Zimbabwe and later married a man from the United States. “I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa and realized that my children were not constantly exposed to this part of their heritage.” Her US born husband felt that “we were not devoting enough time to sharing our black history with our children.”

After speaking with other parents, Trish saw that there was a void. Parents wanted to teach their children to appreciate their culture, but they just didn’t have the time. “…we realized that we had the common theme of desiring [for] our children to learn more, and yet [we were] so busy. In order to keep it interesting and consistent, we came up with Heritage Box as a tool for families to keep the conversation going year round.”

Each box’s contents are carefully selected by a group of educators, teachers, and a special focus group of children.

Sign up for a starter box, and your child will receive: For the second month, your child will receive a “Travel” package that includes a souvenir, games, a book and other fun surprises, all focused on one country in Africa.

Each month brings more history to discover, and more black heroes and African geography to explore.
