Kids can’t get enough of dirt, ick, and goo. There’s something about splashing in muddy puddles or squishing gunk between their fingers that they just love.

So for The Emcee’s fifth birthday, we knew a science themed slime party was the only way to celebrate. Because we wanted to do more than just get our little friends dirty, we asked Ms. Carmen at Kiddie Science to host us in her Brooklyn, NY lab and give us a science lesson.

"Kiddie

Kiddie Science, Inc. presents fun, engaging, hands-on science workshops to young children and families. Since 2013, the Brooklyn-based non profit organization has worked with over 2,000 young scientists to ignite curiosity about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) .

Working with partner educators and organizations to present content that complements scientific thinking, Kiddie Science offers workshops for all ages–the 2Live Crew started experimenting in Ms. Carmen’s programs when they were just 2 and 4 years old!

I knew we needed to incorporate The Emcee’s favorite color, green, and his love of science into our party, so I scoured Pinterest for ideas and came up with a few of my own.

INVITATIONS

Our guests knew they were in for a treat with custom invitations I found on Etsy. We texted family and friends of all ages to join us at Greenaway Labs to celebrate!

ALL ACCESS LAB BADGES

Modern Moments Designs provided all the little touches that made the party special! As they entered Kiddie Science, each guest received a level 5 clearance badge for special access. They even added a bar code with some very important numbers–The Emcee’s date of birth!

Modern Moments’ science laboratory themed items helped tie our theme together with a dessert table banner and decorations for our party favors.

FOOD & DRINKS

Every kid we know loves pizza, and every dad we know loves buffalo wings! We kept it simple by ordering a few pies and honey chipotle platters from the neighborhood shop. I used my mom’s recipe (it’s a hit at every party!) to mix up a batch of green goo punch. I found another recipe for a lighter version that used pineapple juice and Sprite on Pinterest. Green party straws and plastic measuring cups added to our laboratory drink station.

Exquisite Treats by Erica J provided our slime filled cupcakes and science themed cookies. I added water and green food coloring to plastic beakers I ordered on Amazon to decorate our dessert table.

SCIENCE FUN!

Each scientist was ready to experiment with a lab coat and kid sized safety goggles I found on Amazon.

Ms. Carmen led us through a hands on lesson where even parents got in on the fun. I honestly think the moms and dads may have enjoyed learning about slime more than the kids!

Did you know that diapers are filled with polymers? Ms. Carmen explained how the little absorbent beads expand and get squishy to hold liquid.

We played with jelly beads, seeing how they changed shape and texture when water was added.

At the end of our lesson, we made gooey slime to take home, and added color and glitter to make it our own.

THANKS FOR COMING!

After thoroughly washing our hands, we sang happy birthday and enjoyed green oooze cupcakes and cookies. Erica’s delicious goodies were recreated from two pictures I saved on
Pinterest.

We thanked our friends for spending the day with us by giving them their own experiments to take home! I filled black gobo boxes with Ivory soap bars, Elmer’s glue, and instructions for Expanding Soap and making slime in their own laboratories. Each guest received a specimen to inspect–a test tube filled with Smarties.

Our photographer Vlad made sure each family took a picture with the birthday boy before they left, and I texted everyone their copy along with any personal pictures of their children.

I got tons of texts from parents saying how much they enjoyed the party–it was a fun learning experience for everyone!

Special thanks to:
