At the start of each new year, we all make a bunch of resolutions that we probably won’t follow. Ready for real change, women and moms gathered at Hope City Empowerment Center in Brooklyn, NY for MyMommyVents’ first ever vision board party, ENVISION 2016.
ENVISION 2016 marked the kickoff of Mommunity Meetings, MyMommyVents’ smaller, community based events. Designed to facilitate open sharing in a more intimate setting, Mommunity Meetings are focused on providing small group support.
ENVISION 2016 encouraged women to realize their dreams with a vision board. You may have heard of vision boards before–but they’re much more than a passing trend. I shared the story of how a woman named Lucinda Cross changed her life through vision boards. After making one wrong decision, she found herself dealing with the consequences. Determined to encourage herself, Lucinda began cutting out pictures of colleges, cheering crowds, and women in business suits carrying briefcases. Vision boards took Lucinda on an amazing journey to the pages of Essence magazine and the Today Show, where she showed Tamron Hall how to create her own vision board.
A vision board is a tool to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. It’s a visual representation of what you want for your life that you to define your aspirations, visually reinforce them, and keep your intentions focused.
I reminded the women that vision boards are more than just simply cutting out pictures–we discussed the power of intention, and the role it can play in our lives.
Conversation flowed freely as we talked about our families, jobs, and vacations. Over magazines and a light brunch, we cut and pasted our dreams for the new year.
ENVISION 2016 helped women to define goals for their relationships, health, money, careers, and self.
This year, I hope you’ll focus on your dreams and join us for more Mommunity Meetings. Want to make your own vision board? Check out Lucinda’s feature in the January 2015 issue of Essence for some helpful tips and ideas.
