The 2Live Crew really loves science. They’ve built toy cars from recycled materials, learned how electricity works with Ms.Carmen and Kiddie Science, made slime, and even created their own rockets. They had a blast at Maker Faire, and are always up for a trip to the science center.
DaddyVents picked up a science kit for the boys to perform their own experiments at home. Complete with a beaker, safety goggles, test tubes and a microscope, they can observe, investigate, and inquire in their “lab.”
Careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are on the rise, with 2.1 million new jobs expected by 2020–but only 3.5 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in engineering in 2014 went to African Americans. Many colleges and universities are working to close that gap, creating special programs that offer financial aid and internships to students who pursue degrees in STEM fields.
We’re working on helping to close the gap too, by introducing the boys to science, technology, and new vocabulary–but we aren’t the only ones encouraging an early love for STEM in our children. Inspired by the volcano Mamademics and Sesame shared on Facebook, we made our own!
Check out how the 2Live Crew learned about chemical reactions in the video of our volcano below!
To make your own volcano, you’ll need:
Plastic cup {We used the beaker that came in our lab kit}
Water
3-4 Tbs of baking soda {We used Arm & Hammer}
1 tsp of dish soap
4-6 drops of food coloring
1 cup (8 oz) of vinegar
A baking dish and paper towels to contain the eruption
1. Pour the water and food coloring into the plastic cup.
2. Add the baking soda
3. Stir well.
4. Pour in the vinegar, and watch your volcano erupt!

Tiffani, this is perfect and right on time. Mini me is not required to turn in a science project, but because of the parents she has – she will. I think a volcano in 1st grade will be awesome. Love it!
